Grow Rural Education Official Rules

America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education is sponsored by the Monsanto Fund to help farmers positively impact their communities and support local school districts. Specifically, the program gives farmers the opportunity to nominate a public school district in their community to compete for a merit-based grant of either $10,000 or $25,000 to enhance education in the areas of math and/or science. In 2013, the program will operate in 1,271 counties across 39 states.

1. Program Entry Period:
Nomination entries for this program must be received between January 7, 2013, 12:00:01 a.m. Central Time and April 15, 2013, 11:59:59 p.m. Central Time (the "Program Entry Period).

2. Eligibility:
County Eligibility – This program is open to farmers who live or farm in the Eligible Counties listed in Section 12 of these Official Rules and on GrowRuralEducation.com. These are counties that meet the following criteria:

  • A total of 30,000 acres of corn, soybeans, cotton, and/or vegetables (defined as one or more of the following: peppers; tomatoes; onions; broccoli; cucumbers; melons; watermelons; spinach; squash; pumpkins; sweet corn; lettuce; peas; and garden beans) are planted per calendar year based on January 2012 USDA report.

Farmer Eligibility – Entrants must be 21 years or older and actively engaged in farming of 250 acres of corn, soybeans and/or cotton; or 40 acres of openfield vegetables (as defined above); or 10 acres of tomatoes, peppers and/or cucumbers grown in protected culture (glasshouse, nethouse, plastic). Entrants are limited to one nomination per qualified person (regardless of the form of entry). A farmer is "actively engaged in farming if he or she performs the work, or hires and actively manages others who do so.”

Not Eligible to Participate – The following are not eligible to participate in this program: (i) officers, directors, and employees of Monsanto Fund (the "Sponsor”), or of any of its representatives or advertising/promotion agencies; (ii) officers, directors and employees, of Monsanto Company, or of any of its subsidiaries or affiliates; (iii) spouses of any of the officers, directors or employees listed in (i) or (ii), above; (iv) officers, directors and employees of any seed dealers; and (v) spouses of any of the officers, directors or employees listed in (iv), above.

3. How to Nominate a School District:
No purchase necessary to enter. There are two ways to enter this program, as described below. Entries may only be made according to the procedures described in these Official Rules.

A. To enter the program online, visit GrowRuralEducation.com and submit an entry during the Program Entry Period. All entrants are required to complete all required registration information (including, without limitation, your name, address and other contact information). All entries must be completed within the Program Entry Period for the nominee (school district) to be eligible to participate in the program. All submissions become the property of the Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned.

B. To enter the program by mail, please call 1-877-267-3332 or go to GrowRuralEducation.com to print out the official rules and nomination form. Once completed, please mail to America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education, 914 Spruce St., St. Louis, MO 63102 during the Program Entry Period. Entries must be postmarked within the Program Entry Period and must be received by the Sponsor by April 15, 2013. Entries postmarked after April 15, 2013 will not be accepted. Limit one entry per envelope. All submissions become the property of the Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned.

C. Entries that do not comply with these Official Rules will be disqualified. The Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any entry at any time which, in its opinion, is offensive, contains unsuitable material, threatens the safety or well-being of any entrant, or if it is determined that the entrant has not complied with these Official Rules. Limit one entry per person, regardless of method of entry. Entries in excess of this limit are void. To be valid, each entry must provide all information requested.

4. Awards and Grants:
The program is open to all public school districts in the eligible counties within the designated 39 states. Charter Schools are eligible if their NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) ID is located within an eligible county. If the Charter School District NCES ID location is outside of the eligible 1,271 counties, it cannot compete in the program even though it may have schools within the eligible counties. This also applies to public school districts that cross county lines.

The Monsanto Fund will award 194 grants in 39 states. Grant applications must be submitted by the school district; individual schools may not apply. Two grant amounts will be awarded: $10,000 and $25,000. Each eligible school district will only be entitled to apply for one grant and must determine the grant amount for which it will apply. One $10,000 grant will be awarded in each eligible Crop Reporting District (CRD); provided that CRDs with fewer than five eligible school districts will compete against each other for a single $10,000 grant. One $25,000 grant will be awarded per state or designated region. See Sections 12 & 13 of the official rules for a list of eligible states, regions and CRDs; and Section 14 for a list of CRDs with fewer than five school districts.

Eligible grant requests will need to focus on increasing interest or improving instruction or learning in science and/or math. School districts must be nominated by a farmer in one of the eligible counties in order to apply for the grants. Once a school district is nominated, that district will be notified and sent an invitation code to apply for a grant at www.MonsantoFund.org. School districts will have from 12:00:01 a.m. Central Time on January 7, 2013, to 11:59:59 p.m. Central Time on April 30, 2013, to submit their grant applications.

5. Grant Recipients:
Grants will be awarded based on merit, need and community support. The merit component of the score will be based on the overall effect of the school district’s proposed use of the grant, the need component of the score will be based on the school district’s and community’s current financial status and the need for additional funding, and the community support component of the score will be based on the number of farmers who nominate a school district. The more farmers to nominate a school district, the more it demonstrates community support and strengthens their application. One nomination is allowed per farmer. School districts and nominating farmers will be notified by September 30, 2013 regarding which school districts have been awarded grants.

6. Conditions:
